I was very sad to hear of the death of legendary programmer and games designer Mike Singleton who has died from cancer aged just 61. I think this moving blog post on Icemark says a great deal more about the man himself than someone who’s never met him possibly could so I suggest you read that first and then come back here.
For myself, I’m going to point you at a few of the games he created that you really ought to play. For starters the timeless Lords of Midnight and Doomdark’s Revenge on the 8-bit machines and Midwinter on the 16-bits. All of these games introduced large, open worlds and a sense of epic scale and exploration on hardware much more primitive than the PCs and games consoles that run their spiritual successors like Skyrim. And if you want to try more there’s Throne of Fire, War in Middle Earth, Ashes of Empire and Dark Sceptre as well. Rest in Peace, Mike, and thank you for all the games and hours lost in the worlds you created you’ve given us.
