Yes, no back story and very little in the way of 'hand-holding' tutorial mode, I was solving the puzzles in no time. A testament to the immediacy of the genre? Or the thoughtfulness of the design?

Like I said, the game it really reminded me of was Gobliiins because it has the same style of gameplay - ie it takes place over stages which must be beaten to progress further and each stage is a self-contained puzzle. Based on that demo, though, it doesn't have Gobliiins' problem of some of the solutions to the puzzles being a bit obscure.

Thanks for the heads-up on that one, Matty. I don't have any money to spare on games at the moment, but as soon as I do, I might be tempted.

I found the demo really atmospheric (kind of reminded me of a cross between World Of Goo and Abe's Odyssey) and very funny (I loved the 'Police-bot' puzzle).

A balanced and considered review, nice one Matt. I personally think that the sun shines out from betwixt Brooker's rosy bum cheeks, so I can't offer a similar objective view.

I loved the show, revelled in the fact that there was a television program about video games that was made by someone who:

a) Doesn't talk complete pant eggs
b) Loves video games as much as I do
c) Is actually very entertaining

I needed a lie down after watching via iplayer. Apparently it is getting better ratings than either Screenwipe or Newswipe (which I think are much better, based on current evidence), so hopefully he will get the green light to make a series.

The version of r0x for download at http://www.rgcd.co.uk/r0x/ comes complete with a Win32 build - basically the game embedded in the Steem emulator and ready to run.

Hi there - thanks for the nice review :)

The 'score rock killing the player bug'... This is most likely due to the points rock spawning on top of another normal rock; you collect the points, then are instantly killed by the rock beneath. Nice.

Its very, very rare, but I'm afraid this feature does still occur in the game! :)

I'd like to thank you for your positive comments about this game, it was a very nice surprise. As you may have guessed, I am the original author of this game and was googling it randomly just to see if it was out there. Two things I regret: firstly, I shouldn't have given away so many levels in the demo, and secondly I wish I'd just made it endless lives (as it's hard as it is!). Anyway, thanks for your kind words and if there's anything you would like to know, please ask! R
